The anthraquinone glycosides content found in buckthorn is responsible for its primary effect of increased muscular contractions and the moving of water from the lining of the bowel wall into the fecal material being eliminated from the large intestine. This results in strong and soft bowel movements. A properly working bowel is essential to the effectiveness of any cleansing/purifying formula.
